Chelsey Crile is a medical illustrator with specialization in instructional design and visual communication. With over five years of experience in the field, Chelsey is known for her illustration and 3D modeling skills, as well as her passion for making medicine accessible for everyone.

Though she initially attended Iowa State University with the intent to become a comic book artist, she was made aware of the field of medical illustration and immediately made a switch to the Biological/Pre-Medical Illustration major. This is usually where people go “huh?”. Medical illustration is a specialized field, hybridizing science and art with the goal of transforming information into visual images. Chelsey believes it’s important to understand how the world works and translate that knowledge into media that is easily interpreted by the public and professionals. She took her lifelong interest in storytelling, along with her enthusiasm for medicine, and worked in the industry for several years before choosing to pursue her MS in Biomedical Visualization (lovingly coined BVIS) at the University of Illinois Chicago. She graduated from the program in May of 2025.

She has worked as a graphic designer creating editorial layouts for newspapers and magazines, developed digital and print advertisements, managed social media campaigns, as well as designed branding and marketing materials. As a medical illustrator she’s completed projects that have been used in publications, education apps, e-learning modules, and has collaborated with clients to produce custom content. With a digital media focus, she’s versed in illustration programs, as well as 3D modeling and animation software. She excels at problem solving and breaking down complex topics into steps, ensuring the scaffolding of information for learners. She has made it a point to effectively communicate between clients and teams, providing consultation services, to find visual solutions that promote education and patient outcomes.

Chelsey is a member of the Association of Medical Illustrators.
